i agree with the answerer above-lk- but noy entirely(and i dont

have his ,poetry,either).

And the shift from hunting could have brought benefits; perhaps

we will never know if that helped (the writing of) Books, standardised, darwinian education(this being late,i would say
not); or the general comfort of men, their houses and diet too
(not to mention their health.
i can agree that we live now in a too populated world, with the
ills this all causes. But we have the capacity, still, to put things
right,to correct things. And we shouldnt be too disheartened or
scared at the problems before us. There is still a large amount
of goodwill in this world of ours(yes, and the world We make too).
Helpful people and selfless ones- even better, perhaps, that what
we know. So not too many Harsh words, please.

Read Marvin Harris' "Cannibals and Kings" for a good answer to this question. Basically, the downhill path started with the advent of agriculture. It seems a little absurd, but agriculture triggered the loss of the "paradise on Earth" that some anthropologists will argue came with the wandering hunter bands. Agriculture promoted population intensity, which triggered disease spread, war, tyranny, etc.

Do you really want to call this society "cilvilization"? That is quite a stretch.

Unfortunatly, nowadays we are driven by pop culture which is just as toxic as a double cheese burger. Our kids brains are being soaked with information of what to do, what to wear and what to say (to include the not so bright phrase that you suggested) while the adults are wasting precious time on the internet.

How is that for a mid-morning thought?

As the history shows, human civilization is going to last much longer than we might expect.
Actually, it seems to me, that our civilization is moving to a somewhat happy future. Currently, we are at the end of the dark ages ("Children beaten, poisons eaten, look at the world, we're self-defeating, reputed, undisputedly polluted, crack heads with guns ain't afraid to shoot it, countries fighting for oil and gold while the hole in the ozone layer's out of control, brother kills brother in a world full of hate, too ******* late our heads on a plate, nature's dying, children crying, human race *** in a ******* pan frying, with no one to blame except ourselves, greed transforms our earth into hell. Murder, Middle East assassination, extermination, human termination, the war on drugs, humiliation, a ruined nation, with no explanation, something to hide, bound and gagged and tied, a gun in your hand at your head, suicide, it's censorship of my pure mind, no justice, no truce, no hope to find").
Lack of freedom, excess of control. We had already destroyed the Berling Wall.
While no Utopia could exist on Earth, the future era would be something like golden age compared to current situation (about 6 bln people are almost slaves [though some of them only for the eight hours a day]).

Read about aztecs for example. Their society was built upon reputation, not money.

It's hard to say but I think it did not very long ago, and sometimes a man can't do what he has to do.
