Don't waste you'r time. After you get through tapeing off the ref.and freezer section's and gaskets and door handles and after you leave it unplugged for a couple of days to prevent condensation. There are two large surfaces you have to look at every day. Even an expert would have trouble doing a nice job with spray cans. Having it done would be the price of a new black refrigerator. You woulden't like stainless steel either once you trim it to fit around door handles. Most handles are screwed in place from behind. You will love removing the gaskets and interior panels on both doors.

We used to offer a service that changed the color of kitchen stoves and refridgerators. What we used was an Expoxy Paint that was 2 part mix and spray. That worked well and customers were quite satisfied. You can buy that paint at MAB paints.
Recently, Ive heard of spraying it with an Automotive Polyurethane finish. First the undercoat is sprayed onto the surface, then several coats of Clear Coat are sprayed onto that. Sanding with 2000 grit wet paper. This produces an extremely hard surface that is durable and lasting. This is a fairly easy spray painting with almost any kind of sprayer available, since the final coat is sanded with 2000 grit and polished out by buffing. Id say any handyman who can spray paint can do this sucessfully. The Urathane system is available at Auto Stores like NAPA to the general public An average Ref. should cost no more than $50 to do.

I think that you would be better off by painting it with an epoxy based paint that you can buy from just about anywhere they sell spray paint. Apparently one responder is a professional painter who also recommends the epoxy paint but the kind that you put in a spray gun. The appliance paints on the market can scratch off easily so that is why I recommend epoxy based as it is much tougher and it takes much more abuse and won't wear off where everyone touches all of the time. The laminate "stainless panels" usually peel off eventually and then you have a mess and can never find a proper glue to reattach them.

Yes! There is a stainless steel adhesive film that's made just for this purpose. I re-did my kitchen with it and it looks great. You'd never know it wasn't the real thing unless you touched it because it's not cold like steel. You may not have to mail order it, I've seen it becoming available in hardware stores and home good stores. But you can get a sample of it from the website below cheaply to see if it's what you want to use.

Better is relative. Appliance paint is going to be much cheaper and the stainless panels are usually only made for selected models.

Appliance paint works fairly well. You should have good results going to a darker color and if not then you try the SS paneling.

Spray paint it with appliance paint. If you cannot do a good job with spray, find an auto body repairman that can do the job. You will be happy with your new color.
