Yes, try to buy a Data Cable for both desktop and laptop.

Are you sure the drive is "dead", and not simply corrupt?
You should be able to re-install Windows without affecting other partitions

If not, then your best bet will be to take the damaged drive out of the machine, and fit it in another, working computer as a "slave" device.

You may (and I emphasise, "may" not "certainly will") be able to copy some of your files from the old drive to the new.

This has worked for me in perhaps 60% of similar cases, so you are in with a good chance.

If you can access the files from DOS, can you copy them to a removable medium? Floppy, CD,etc..?

Failing that, there are companies who specialise in recovering data from dead drives, but they're expensive...

Yes. The best , easiest and cheapest, is ( and I am not lying) place the HD in a bag, and in a freezer for a few hours. We have had this work a number of times here and mostly laptops, but the freeze and play ( sometimes pray) technique does work. Many times this will revive the drive long enough to copy the data off of it. A Physical recovery is a bit harder. Sometimes possible using software, sometimes requires a pay for tech to do it.

You might be able to recover the files by connecting the hard drive to another computer. If you don't know how to do this then it's best left to a professional.

I had a similar problem a while ago and I used a data recovery programme off the internet which managed to find my lost files.

Use a data cable, but ask yourself why do you want to place currupt files onto a working pc coz they may well currupt that pc too?

i think if you put the second hard drive in another machine set it to slave and then you should be able to see the files off our old hard disk.
