Why doesn't Britain just go to commercial television?

It seems ridiculous that you have to pay that enormous TV license fee every year. Is it worth it to not have to watch commercials?

The reason why we don't go commercial is because the BBC wont allow it to happen (There has been talk about abolishing the TV License fee for ages, but it never happens), there is way too much money involved for them to end the license fee, if we did end license fees the BBC wouldn't be able to keep afloat and would have to cut back its expenditures by about 50% or face collapse, even with advertising.
