I heard that traditionally women would have others (maids?) button up their clothes for them, so the buttons would be sewn to suit the other person doing the buttoning up. I suppose I see that this would be true in the case of corsets and stuff like that, so it could be that they just extended the same rule to blouses, etc.
Men have always dressed themselves, so the buttons on a man's shirt would be sewn on to suit him doing the buttons up himself.

It comes from when men used swords as side arms, mens are opposite as we could get our right hands onto the hilt and draw the sword,
before that they all buttoned on the womans side. hope that helps.

Back in the days men had to keep their right hand tucked into their coats so as to be ready for cold-weather swordplay, whereas women always breastfed with the left breast and protected their babies by covering them with the right side of the dress or coat.

I don't know but I'd prefer it if they all buttoned on the mens side. It seems more natural.

Originally they were on the same side. When men's clothing became elaborate, doing their coats up on that side interfered with drawing the sword and so they changed it.
So i was told.
