A proprietary protocol is one that is written by a company for use only on their systems. They never publish it so no one else can make compatible products. Examples: Apple's operating system, OS X, will only run on Macintosh hardware.

The opposite is an open protocol with the details published. There are many examples of this. The one you mention, HTTP, is a good place to start.

The advantages of proprietary protocols: It's designed specifically for the purpose it's being used for and written from the ground up to do that so it will usually be more efficient and faster. But that's it... this is why there aren't many proprietary networking protocols left, there just isn't that much gained.

Open protocols, on the other hand, have many advantages: Since they're open you can have multi-vendor networks that work together. Development is cheaper and takes less time because you're building from parts that are already written. There are other good things about open standards but they all pretty much start with those two.
