It seems the emphasis is on humiliation and drama rather than really bringing out the best in the contestants...I know Simon started it, and it has spawned countless imitators...but does anyone feel like its getting out-of-hand? Its heart-breaking and cruel, many times.

partially, yes. but i think that the producers of the shows are the one getting snarky/mean...they tell the hosts to portray someone who is mean..thats the way i see it..that's why simon is so famous...and that's one of the reasons the producers of american idol got tons of money right now :)

It's all show for TV and the more people watch the more it will continue.
