I work a professional job where skirts would be innapropriate, but otherwise am fairly normal, perhaps a bit sporty. What should I have in my wardrobe? I would like to be better dressed.

start with great widelegged trousers (4 to 6)...a complement to any wardrobe...add some cute blouses(10) and silky top(3 to 5) u can wear during the day under a jacket and take off at night...shoes(4 pair for day 4 pair for night & 4 casual) should be comfortable and cute printed coats are a must (5 to 7)...shop at limited and def. zara for the coats...make sure that your picking quality timeless pieces that you can wear year after year...dont just spend the money on something that you don't like or kindof like because of the price...HAPPY SHOPPING

For the first time in my life I find I actually have very few clothes, about seven skirts, three or four jumpers and two shirts. I don't have a job and the money has to go elsewhere. However the pieces I do have are high quality and capsule, everything combines nicely. When I get back into work - which please god won't take too long - I'll definitly expand my wardrobe first thing but for now I'd say go for seven outfits, one for each weekday (which will normally give you two 'spare' as a workweek tends to be five days) and make them inter-combineable at least in part. This should set up your basic workwear, you can then add and change as you go and enjoy buying something that's just for you-time not work-time knowing that you have workwear sorted and there is no pressure thus avoiding panic-misbuys.

You should definitely have the standard dress pants, black gray, tan and pinstripes. Have a few different styles and and colors of each so you're not wearing the same thing all the time. Make sure you have comfortable, yet professional shoes because high heels aren't the best thing to be in all day long. Also make sure you have business jackets that either match or go with your pants, sweaters and plenty of button up collared nice shirts.

I work at a radio station, and looking presentable for clients is very important (even for a news anchor/reporter that can't be seen by the audience.) What I found works is to get items you can easily combine---like different colors of shirts, a few pairs of trousers, and a few pairs of black shoes. Black goes with anything, so it's my default choice for a color for shoes or trousers. Grey ones are nice for winter as well. I never wear skirts either.

I'd say at least six pairs of trousers, 12 (neutrals and some color - prints or stripes are limiting so don't have to many of those, best to have more solids, more possibilities) shirts, three pairs of fitted coats (or blazers) that can be worn with the 6 trousers and at least 4 pairs of shoes (black and brown being the basics, another posibility can be Navy Blue and Taupe\Cream\Beige).

Where are skirts inappropriate, except for a hospital, and in that case you'd have scrubs.

I can tell you that I have 80 pairs of shoes. They're easy to count shoes because I know how many shoe holder slots I have, the rest of the stuff is harder.
50-70 skirts
countless shirts
30 sweaters
25 bags
lots of accessories like belts, scarves etc

I agree with "littleone". I couldn't even begin to tell you how many trousers, suits, shoes, and shirts I own, but I can tell you that I never have anything to wear to work. When shopping try to keep in mind classic style so you can mix and match. Black is always a favorite of mine. You can always throw in a few trendy pieces for added style and not go broke trying to keep up. I have two full closets, one for fall/winter and one for sping/summer if that tells you anything about "How much is enough". Good luck and Happy shopping!

you can never have too much. although. accesorizing correctly may and usually does make your wardrobe seem to be larger. for you can create more outfits with a help of a belt, scarf, bag, bracelet, ring, etc.

When you think you have enough, double it. or triple it. I have wardrobes of clothes, loads and loads of shoes, and still have nothing to wear to work. It's very annoying....
