The best female hockey player that I have ever see play is Hayley Wickenheiser. She has played in a Pro Mens League in Europe but has never made the NHL. She has probably the best build possible for the rigours of the NHL but would still be small by NHL standards. I hope she makes it some day but I think she may be a target for some of the dinosaurs that still roam the ice in the NHL. If you want to try out by all means go ahead but I think you should try out for a pro female league and Team Canada Womens Team first and if you make it and are good enough you may be noticed and get a shot at the NHL. Good luck. Just so everyone knows the charade of having Manon Rheaume play an exhibition game for the Tampa Bay Lightning was a publicity stunt by Phil Espisito to draw fans the games. No offense to Manon, I never saw her play and I am sure she was a great goalie but her exhibition games(which should not count as being in the NHL) was a shot to be the first in the record books and draw fans. Again as you have seen by my entire answer I have nothing against women or female hockey players. I do support them unlike many men but I want to give credit where credit is due and I will be the first one to line up and buy tickets if Hailey or another female legitimately makes it to the NHL.

The whole thing with Manon Rheaume was actually just a publicity stunt to bolster hockey in the south. I'm not trying to take anything away from her since she did prove that she can play in the NHL, but that's just the sad truth of that period. Hayley Wickenheiser has played with the Finnish Elite League, too. They're just as tough as the NHL.

OK, besides being a goalie (which is now even tougher) can you (or any woman) handle playing hockey when many players are now over 6'2" and well over 200 lbs? Even at their size many of them are faster, stronger and more agile then hockey players from the past. Women's hockey is fun to watch and I just don't see any woman playing in the NHL, especially outside of goalie.

Manon Rheaume played one period and allowed 3 goals on 10 shots in a preseason game for the Tampa Bay Lightning. If a women is good enough to play in the NHL I say go for it but I dont' see it happening in the regular season in the next 200 yrs.

As two other people have suggested, a Quebec-born goalie named Manon Rheaume once played a pre-season game for the Tampa Bay Lightning. I think she ended up playing for their minor-league team, the Atlanta Knights. That was back in the 90's.
I think the current NHL game relies so much on speed that a female player might not have a chance anymore.

Manon Rheaume played a couple of exhibition games for the Tampa Bay Lightning, in 1992 & 1993.

In terms of pro men's hockey, Hayley Wickenheiser, considered one of the best female players ever, played the 2002-03 season in the men's pro league in Finland. She was the first woman to score a point in a men's pro league.

Yeah, there was Manon Rheaume and I think Angela Ruggerio played with her bro in the "A" last year...if you wanna count that.
Could a woman play in the NHL? Yes, it's possible...for a season or two, but I would have serious doubts about one withstanding the "wear and tear" of it long term.

i rather not suggest it because hockey is a rough contact sport. However i believed Swedish goalie for the Women's Olympic team is currently playing in either Europe or Canada with all guys.

their have been two, manon rhueme and angela ruggiero (no where close to the right spelling i think) who have played pro american hockey, rheume played nhl preseason i think... she might have an advantage too because some of the men may not want to hit a girl as hard... and they would probably make you sign some sort of release form that said that you cannot file for sexual harrasment or abuse from getting pegged consistently by the players
