A Single Irish Chain quilt is very easy - it's just a nine patch block alternated with a plain setting square. The setting squares are the generally the same fabric (usually a light solid) as the background (the four squares) of the nine patch. The most important thing is that there is strong contrast between the background/setting squares and the foreground of the nine patch (the five squares that make the X).

If you still want a pattern, or if you're also interested in doing a Double Irish Chain, check out the book Irish Chain in a Day by Eleanor Burns (second link). She has very clear, very easy instructions. The book teaches both the Single and the Double Irish Chains.

Check the link below for a bunch of pictures of Single Irish Chain quilts.

Go to www.quilterscache.com then look up 'Irish Chain' under the Alphabetized Lists for an 18" block.
Or try this http://quickquilts.com/golden/qg24_pattern/ for a quilt called 'Fields and Fences' but it is a variation of a Single Irish Chain.

Sounds like you might have to go to Ireland for that one.
