Dogs have possesions, and don't want to share them just like little kids, only you can't make a dog share. I have a great dog, she's a huge baby, and doesn't even like the cat eating out of her bowl. Just let your dog have her way. You wouldn't want someone coming over and making themselves at home with your closet would you?

Is the dog from the pound or was it ever a stray? We got two dogs from the pound and both of them are very protective of anything that they consider "their's". This goes for when they eat too. They will horde their food.

The other possibility is if the dog came from a large litter and was allowed to stay with the litter for a long time. The competition could come from competition with siblings.

Either way it is a common personality trait and fun to watch at times. :)

It is a territory thing. They do not like other animals coming in as messing with there space and/or stuff.
