I will be quitting my bad habit of smoking soon (got the patch ready to go, just waiting for a weekend to start so I can see how it affects me). I'm concerned about what to do with my hands... the smoking was somthing to occupy them and it really is an oral fixation. I know the basics.. walk, exercise, eat healthy and so on... however, I am looking for something that can occupy my hands while dealing with the withdrawls until my habits change.

I'm aware... use carrot sticks or celery sticks or gum, or mints and things of the like... I'm looking for other ideas

You're giving a smoke way too much power. Stop obsessing on what to do with your hands and mouth and just consider yourself a non-smoker. Non-smokers don't worry about it. But you'll find you seem to have a lot more time, so get something like a Rubik's cube or knit, or some small hand weights.
You'll find the patch to be very effective if you decide that once you slap it on, you're a non-smoker. It really does diminish the physical cravings. The worst thing to say is "I'm trying to quit"-- tell yourself "I have quit" and you'll be successful. Congratulations.

I quit a year ago and it's a battle every day. i just hope you pin point what makes you smoke and be real careful in those situations. Don't worry about your hands so much as what you stick in your mouth because you don't want to rot your teeth or get big and fat from replacing cigs with food. You'll just find an excuse to go back to smoking. Good luck and it will soon not be the first thing you think of in the morning!

I'll be in the same boat. Someone told me to cut straws up and to either chew on them or inhale them like you would a smoke. Also, my grandfather use to use a match book. He would just rub the matchbook in a circular motion with his forefinger, thumb and middle finger. I imagine you can do this with anything. I will be trying the straws and a smooth rock. Good luck!

Flavored toothpicks too.
Violet has a valid point !- but sounds easier than done- did I just now defeat myself in saying that?

I swear by straws because I am not much of a candy eater. For the anger, get a punching bag! Im on 13 days right now and hanging in there, I DO NOT look to the future, one minute at a time! Good luck to u!

i quit 2 months ago and still feverishly chew on pens at the office. other than that i have enough distractions at home to keep me from the oral fixation.

i'd go for the simple things that your mouth will eventually destroy, like pens and things. although i'm sure the leeching plastic isn't good for me. d'oh!

rubber bands, paper clips, silly putty to keep the hands busy
knitting, crocheting

Sunflower or pumkin seeds; the ones in the shells, they seem to give the same hand mouth action.
