Apparently my computer had to be totally re-set because it had a virus... and my parents re-set everything, so I've lost all of my favourites, all of my personal documents and pictures and truthfully they know nothing about computers, so they come up with re-starting the whole thing! =O
Is there any way I can get everything back? I've lost important documents like coursework and I was writing a novel and I've lost it! I'm so pissed off. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

if they wiped your hard drive then its gone, but otherwise check under the "recycle bin", or look in "my computer" and see if theres anything left on the hard drives, unless they compleatly wiped it there will still be a record of your work somewhere on your PC
also tell your parents next time to use anti virus software like Norton, or Spysweeper so then they dont have to wipe everything

First the good news... whatever they have done, the chances are that there is a way you can get your stuff back.
The bad news... you may have to pay a little to do it.
The Technical Bit:
When you save a document, two things happen. First, the data is saved onto the hard disk, and secondly the location of the data on the disk is stored in an index.
When you delete a document the data on the disk in untouched. What actually happens is the index is altered to remove the location of the data. The data remains there, until some new data is stored on that part of the disk over the top of it.
What this means, is that it is possible to attempt to locate the data through other means than the disk index, and as long as it hasn't been over written you can then recover it.
The Solution:
Sadly (for you) the ability to do this has a huge commercial value - think how much companies are willing to pay to get back work they thought had gone forever!
There are many programs that can perform this kid of recovery operation, but as a rule they are all commercial ones (ie you have to pay for them)
One example is Restorer2000, which I've provided a link to below. They provide a demo version of their software which you can try for free, and prices start from $29.99 which is pretty good for this type of program.
Try a google search for "undelete software" to find plenty of other examples (2nd link below).

Don't blame your parents on this as they did the smartest and least costly thing for a virus. Instead you should be asking yourself how your computer GOT the virus. There are several good FREE anti-virus protection programs out there so there is no reason your computer shouldn't have been protected.
You also have learned a valuable lesson - back up what is important to you! And don't just back it up to another place on your computer - put it on CD's. Computers are machines that are subject to malfunction - be prepared.

Like has been said, it depends on exactly what was done. I'd sit the parents down, explain how serious this is and interrogate them step-by-step about what they did. Then maybe come back and ask again and we'll do our best.
I won't rub it in by going on about backing up etc . . . sorry to hear of your woes.

Try to take the hard disk to a computer repair shop or somewhere to an expert....he might be able to find the ghost files or how do they call it....the files are never really lost otherwise the police wouldn't be able to catch all those paedophiles....try to find an expert....

How exactly did they re-set your computer? Did they wipe and reinstall Windows? If this is the case then I would assume that all your work will be lost.
