Here's the deal: Due to the story line, John Stewart became a GL to replace Hal during his absence from Earth due to a mission off-world, then he remained a GL, in agreement from the Guardians of the planet OA. Later, when Hal became Parallax and went insane, destroying other Green Lanterns for their rings, the Guardians bestowed a ring on Kyle Rayner to replace Hal. Again, he remained a Green Lantern, then he became "Ion" a GL like character, then a GL, then ION again. Currently, Kyle is ION, and John Stewart is a Green Lantern. Hal Jordan was rescued from the control of Parallax, and has "returned" to life as a Green Lantern. To make this even more convuluted, the "original" Green Lantern, Alan Scott, (who appeared in the 40's ) has similar powers and a ring, but his powers are mystical based, and is susceptible to wood (like Superman is to Kryptonite). He is still alive due to this power, and goes by the name Sentinel. If you are still with me, another reason there are many Green Lanterns is because some planets are assigned as being in Sectors, and some Sectors receive more threats than others. It's also because DC just can't seem to make it's mind up on setting stories straight; they'd rather have things remain chaotic as not to disappoint any fans, which in turn means, they want more revenue. If you read all that, I hope it helped.

Its Kyle Rayner. And dont forget Guy Gardner. Theoretically, they all served as Green Lantern of our sector seperately over time. DC has done it every way - removing the ring rom one Lantern so another can serve as a replacement, as well as simply creating multiple rings for any to serve at any time. In fact, the ring itsel can generate more rings! Currently, Kyle Rayner does not possesss a Lantern ring, but is still super powerful. Guy Gardner has been assigned a new sector. Hal Jordan seems to be serving as our lantern for now, but John Stuart seems to have faded away. I am not sure how todays continuity will shake out, but I am sure both John and Hal will keep rings. The Guardians of the Galaxy seem to be playing things fast and loose these days!

There are about 7200 eco-friendly Lanterns in total - there are 5 from Earth. the first actual eco-friendly Lantern become Alan Scott Then Hal Jordan (who the movie is in accordance to), guy Gardner, John Stewart (the black guy from the Justice League caricature) and Kyle Rayner. John Stewart become used contained in the caricature because the creators wanted/necessary a black personality to make the league a lot less white. You win, yet your sister isn't thoroughly incorrect.

There were originally supposed to be 3600 Green Lanterns, one for each sector of the universe, as defined by the Guardians of Oa, who made the rings and the Central Power Battery.
The Green Lantern Corps was decimated in recent years, by the Crisis on Inifinite Earths, and more recently by Hal Jordan going mad after Coast City (along with Carol Ferris) whom he loved) was destroyed by Mongul. Hal tried to steal the power to raise the dead, and he killed a lot of GL’s who got inhis way, and a lot of Guardians. They defeated him, but there was only one Guardian left, and he had to restart the Corps. John was already an alternate GL, Hal’s backup. Kyle Rainer was selected as the first GL of the newly reformed Corps, by the last Guardian. Hal was eventually restored to sanity and went through a period of penance, though I personally am sickened by the way the higher ups at DC decided to make a villain out of him. It sends a terrible message to their young readers. He was restored as a Green Lantern.
You didn’t mention Alan Scott, but I will throw him in for free. Long ago, the Guardians tried to eliminate all magical powers from the universe, and put them into the form of a meteor, called the Starheart, which they fired into an alternate universe. It crashed on Earth 2. Alan Scott (who was a railroad engineer at the time) found a lantern that had been made from the metal of the meteor. He found that it gave him power. So he took a portion of the metal and shaped it into a ring that would be a lot easier to carry around than the lantern, and used the lantern to charge the ring with energy periodically.
So Alan Scott’s ring used magic green energy instead of scientific green energy; and his limitation was in not being able to affect things made of wood (instead of the color yellow like the other rings.) In a sense, he was probably not ‘supposed’ to be a Green Lantern, but the magic chose him and he used it honorably, so the Guardians had no objection. Eventually, Earth 1 and Earth 2 were combined, in the Crisis on Infinite Earths, so there was the Golden Age Green Lantern and the Silver Age Green Lantern together.
To a certain degree, Alan Scott’s lantern and ring was probably based on the magic rings and lamps out of the stories of Aladdin and the Arabian Nights; while Hal Jordan’s ring and lantern were based on the Lens of ‘Doc’ Smith’s Lensman series, classic s/f books. Look those up if you want to; you may find them very interesting.

Yes there is one from each planet. But you have to realize the you can't be a green lantern forever. Each green lantern replaced the one before him.

No its one green lantern per space sector. And they all earned their rings(kyle is no longer a lantern) so the guardians declined to take their rings away.

I think it's because of the way DC Comics operates, which is very confusing.
