I think it is a mistake to think of these issues as left versus right. I think you will find lots of people who oppose the death penalty and are pro life. You should not reduce the discussion to a left vs right argument.

Pope John Paul said that the death penalty is wrong in societies that have other ways to protect their citizens.

It is interesting that more and more people oppose the death penalty because they believe it is an ineffective way of keeping us safe. They are coming to this position for practical, rather than for moral reasons.

Here are some of the facts about the death penalty that conservatives and liberals alike are paying attention to-

It is not a deterrent- states with the death penalty have higher homicide rates than states that do not. People who commit murder do not think they will be caught, let alone punished, that is, if they think at all.

The death penalty costs much more than life sentences. A great deal of the extra cost comes before conviction. There is an unmet need for more well funded victims’ assistance programs. (In my opinion, that is where we should spend the extra money.)

Life without parole is on the books in more and more states. It means what it says. It is no picnic to be locked up in a tiny cell for 23 of 24 hours a day.

Over 120 people have been released from death row with evidence of their innocence. In the overwhelming number of these cases, the evidence was not DNA. DNA is not a miracle cure for wrongful convictions. The exonerees had spent many years on death row before being found innocent. Speeding up the process would guarantee the execution of an innocent person. It is human nature to make mistakes.

Death sentences can be very hard on victims’ families. The process takes a long time and they are forced to relive their ordeal over and over again, in courts and in the media. Some murder victims’ family members have said that although they support the death penalty in theory, they do not want to see it in the case of their murdered loved one because of how the process affects families like theirs. Life without parole is swift and sure and rarely results in appeals.

Last of all, opposing the death penalty does not mean you excuse or coddle criminals who commit brutal and depraved acts. They must be punished severely. But we need to use common sense based on the facts, not to focus on revenge which accomplishes nothing.

I am pro-choice and fine with the death penalty. In fact, I think it's a bit silly that executions are stopped in several states because lethal injection isn't humane enough. These people aren't on Death Row because they did very humane things.

kveryeffective - I'm pro-choice yet 7 months pregnant with a planned pregnancy. My husband and I tried to have a baby for quite some time, and I am ecstatic. Yup, apparently, I hate fetuses so much, huh?

Pro-choice think the fetus is the most evil thing in the world and should be kill without question by one person at anytime while in the womb. The woman is never every wrong about killing the fetus.

While someone who murders people in cold blood deserves to live. Maybe just maybe after all the appeals that person my not be guilty of murder and be put to death by accident because our courts may make mistakes.

Pro-life thinks the fetus has a right to live because he hasn't violated any laws.

Someone who murders in cold blood has given their right to live after there is a trail.

I think a good comprise is if someone wants an abortion they should have to go through the courts and make the case why the want to chop up a human being and the fetus be represented and allowed to have all the appeals given to death row inmates.

To Truth: Her body yes but a fetus is not her body. It has its own DNA it is seprate living being. Can't tell what to do with her body what about breat implants they were ban. Liberals want to regulate what we eat put in our bodies as with types of fat or what we can do as in smoking or telling all sorts of other things to our bodies but abortion is different. Why?

Why? Because the death penalty can be used against innocent people, (re: Hurricane Carter). Read "The Wrong Men" about people falsely accused and given the death penalty.
Pro-choice? Because who the hell can tell a woman what to do with her body? It belongs to her, and no government has the right to interfere with that most personal belonging.

I am pro-choice and support the death penalty. I think both are separate issues.

It would only be a liberal that would believe that.

Liberalism is ok when it is practiced.

But todays America's liberals, are not real liberals.

They are against change of all types and devoid of new idea's or solutions to problems.

Conservatives offered many new programs and initiatives the last 6 years, and liberals always fought against them, with never an original idea or solution to offer in return.

Liberals love it whan a woman murders a child that is unborn but hate it when criminals who rape, murder and commit attrocities get the death penality.

In reality the liberals of today are Stalinists and Marxists. Their belief that government is the solution to all problems and no wealth show be privately owned is what drives todays liberals.

They are also anti-American. They believe America is the worlds problem and the world would be better off without America in it.

Liberals are all for forsaking the poor weak and downtrodden if America's military is involved in keeping them alive, but insist on keeping America's poor weak and downtrodden in their miserable existance because of 'political correctness', (New Orleans and any urban city).

without understanding your reasoning for being professional-determination or anti-lack of life penalty, it truly is no longer achieveable to assert no matter if you're a hypocrite or no longer. It also relies upon on the way you outline life. in case you be conscious the shortcoming of life penalty as ending a life, and do not see overdue time period abortions as doing so, you're literally not a hypocrite. i might want to project the stance on overdue time period abortion, on account that technically a lot of those fetuses might want to live on outdoors the womb, there is a few info that they could learn even even as contained in the womb, and they respond to a brilliant type of stimuli.

I too am pro choice and pro death penalty (though I think the criteria should be revamped due to DNA). I don't really associate one with the other though, to me they are two separate issues. But I get the point. It reminds me of those who are pro-lifers and for the death penalty. Life seems to be more precious to them before birth than after it.
