Yes, they are. But your kid or the adult, will need to have some patience and a little technical brain. It's suppoted by the lego community so you can find lots and lots of manuals to make your robot do all kinds of stuff. Great for your imagination lots of options.

If you aren't that technical but still like a really good robot go for a robosapien V2.

My youngest swears by it, I have no idea personally, but it keeps him and his buddies busy. See link provided below.
