I suppose technically it is, but it is a fact of life we unfortunately cannot change. We can however change the amounts of methane we release via other sources though.

Did you read Boris Johnson's column in today's Daily Telegraph, then? It was about offsetting your carbon dioxide footprint and he's suggestion was to kill a cow. Each cow produces 90kg of methane a year and as greenhouse gases go, methane is about 24 times worse than CO2. As there are about (well, give or take 1 or 2) 1.3 billion cows on this planet, then that's the equivalent of (let me work this out 90kg x 24 x 1,300,000,000) 2,808,000,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Now I guess human farts produce a lot less CO2 than cows, let's say just 0.001kg per year, per person. If we assume 6 billion humans that's still the equivalent of 144,000 tonnes of CO2.

Yes, but so does human exhaling for that matter. Some people have seriously made a issue over the amount of cow flatulence being released into the atmosphere.

Probably a tiny bit, it is methane gas. You should send this one to Mythbusters.

It does contribute, but very little. Damn good question, though.
