When you make a purchase over the web or a phone they usually ask for the 3 digit security code that is printed on the back of the card. That is to keep people who picked up credit card receipts with the imprint of the front from being able to use the card.
Any other numbers on the card should have been explained to you when the bank or store issued the card to you.

A credit card is a digitally maintained account that you have with a bank. You can spend up to a certain amount of money with your credit card. I don't know what country you live in, but most developed countries have this system. If it is asking you for a credit card number, then it means that you must pay money in order to continue viewing, or using the service.
