Well, thiis is because they are migrating away for the winter. A litlle late you might say but they might have come from further north or perhaps because it has been a particularly mild winter, (global warming), that they are just confused.

They are probably starlings. They might demonstrate their strange flight patterns soon. Should they prove to be vultures, I would check on what you are throwing away on your compost heap!
