I wonder if he thinks being the fastest is being the best. Or he could come from a competitive family.
Either way, it must be irritating working with him

As the others say, it is insecurity. Where it results in obsessive behaviour like this it is usually deep rooted and based on childhood experiences. Often a child who doesn't receive enough affection and attention will display such behaviour as a grown up.

He may start to relax if his colleagues don't over-react but make small congratulatory comments from time to time and otherwise just act as though everything is normal. Sometimes the need to be noticed will diminish if he begins to feel he is accepted in the same way as everyone else.

He is trying to make up for his shortcomings by being efficient, or at least attempting to appear more efficient than his coworkers. If he were told by his manager that his performance was subpar, he could justify his value to the company by saying he is efficient.

Obviously, it's not the speed that counts, but the quality, so he is misguided in this belief.

Wanting the attention for being the best.

Or maybe he just works faster than you and that makes you a slacker.

hehehe

immaturity and insecurity. has to be the fastest to show you hes great - he doesn't think so himself and this behaviour would be to hide this and convince himself he is worth it. Then again he just might want to show you all up in front of the boss. Maybe he just wants friends?

it is annoying once we reach to this believe that his doing fast hurt us. since company is expected same work from both of you. if he is doing his job faster and always do it that way. then there should be free time for him talking about how fast did he do his work. and he doesn't allow to do so you can talk to your boss about it.

Deep rooted insecurity and an inferiority complex. If he's faster than he feels superior.

He doesn't have any self-confidence, so he has to prove himself by doing the one thing he is best at.
