My best friend decorated her baby boy's room with themes from Winnie the Pooh because she really likes this cartoon.
If you still hide a kid inside of you and you have a favourite cartoon hero maybe u can use it as a decoration theme.

I have one word of advice...don't over think it or make it too cutesy. I spent hours stenciling Pooh-Bears & Tiggers for my sons room before he was born. Custom paint colors, special bedding, I even cross-stitched a wall plaque. By the time he was 1 though he was more into cars & trucks than Pooh-Bear and soon all my efforts for that cute baby room were shattered and replaced with a more boyish car & truck themed room.
So the moral of the story...your child will change so much in that first year & will soon have their own preferences. My advice choose something simple and when the child is a little older have them help pick out a theme.

One thing that I did for my baby's room is I took a piece of art paper and had all the family members and friends each take a colored marker and draw something little that had to do with my theme. Which is a bug and flower theme. It didn't matter how well every one could draw, just that they had added to the picture. I brought the picture in with me to the delivery room and used it as my focal point. Now the picture hangs in her room. It's very cute and has a story. This also helped when things got tough in the delivery room, the duck my sister drew actually made me laugh.

I do like all the cutsie themes. But chose to do a theme that the baby can grow into. Nautical is always sweet for a boy. Pink/purple always great for a girl.

For a baby use soft color. Try to stay away from bold primary colors as they are very stimulating. We want babies to sleep in their rooms.
Below is a link from HGTV with some examples.

Boy or Girl////
I'd go with a white or yellow (transgender colors). You could put balloons on the wall.. or clowns....have a crib theme of confetti colors... just put all kinds of colors everywhere... nothing to distinct between a girl or boy...
