Business Advertisers get your numbers off your pc through spyware; here's a definition and a how to protect tip for you from netlingo.com

===========
spyware

Software that gathers information about a user as he or she navigates around the Web, it is intended to track surfing habits in order to build marketing profiles. Spyware is often included in "free downloads" from the Web, where the license agreement (which so many of us accept without reading) may mention that information about your habits will be transmitted back to the company's Web site. Spyware is a major cause for public concern about privacy on the Internet.

Spyware is a type of software that gets onto computers without their users' knowledge. The resource-hungry programs often render machines unusable causing your Internet experience to be very frustrating. It is necessary for you to download and run anti-spyware programs. My personal experience has led me to use the programs below in conjunction with anti-adware programs and run them at a minimum once a week. One program will find certain malware and you'll delete it, and then run another program will find other malware and you'll delete that. I've had it return more than 800 infected files before! Keep running these programs on a weekly basis until you get zero infected files. Spyware has forced us to think about the maintenace of our computers in the same way we maintain other things, such as brushing your teeth, cleaning your house, or oiling your car. As a Windows user I had to download the Windows Service Pack 2, and now I run anti-spyware, anti-adware, and an anti-virus program (with a firewall) in order to protect my information and keep these malicious programs off of my computer.

if business establishments/advertisers keep on calling you without your knowledge how they got your number, call FTC. They will arrest those buggers.

The only way someone can get your number that is somehow related to your computer is......wait for it........it's going to be shocking.......here it comes.......You give it to them!!!

Yes that's right. You filled out some form for more information or to sign up for a membership or something and that information got sold to a data mining company that sold your information to other data miners who sold their lists to every two bit operation that is interested in that type of stuff.

I promise no one is snooping around on your computer specifically. I used to work for an ISP and it's amazing the fantasy's so many people dream up on this subject.

Get 'adaware' from lavasoft.com

make sure it is updated, and run a full scan

it gets rid of most spyware--if you still have problems, then get norton anti-virus and run it

usually people can't get phone numbers off of your computer though, they might be getting them from someplace else.
