It HAS to be Judy Garland.

There are many great versions of this song, but Judy's is the best and most moving.

Eva Cassidy's version is fine, but to me it doesn't have the emotional intensity of the original.

I posted this question after reading a news item on Leona Lewis UK X Factor, which said: "Lewis sang Eva Cassidy's Over The Rainbow at Billie's funeral - and later performed the same song in the X Factor semi-finals".

I was so Grrrr - it's not Eva's song - it's Judy's.

Great song though - it deserves to be covered.

There can be no doubt that the definitive version of 'Over the Rainbow' must be the original recorded by Judy Garland for
the soundtrack of 'The Wizard of Oz'. Many subsequent versions were excellent productions using 8-track stereo,
balanced studio backing and digital enhancement - attributes
unheard of in 1939.However, the accolade of 'Definitive Version'
can only be awarded to the original version which, over the decades has brought tears to many eyes even long after Judy's
passing and which forever will be associated with her.

The song was originally written especially for Judy Garland.

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow"
music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg

This is the original and definitive version.

The version by Eva Cassidy is a cover version and cannot compare to the original. Accept no substitutes!

Obviously the Judy Garland version is the one we all know, and it's superb.
However, Eva Cassidy did a recording of it which is better than the Judy Garland one!
It's very moving, and I cry every time I hear it.

Judy Garland, of course.

Just saw the movie on the big screen the other night, and that whole scene is perfect. Emotionally, it's spot-on, and so delicately choreographed and filmed.

I think she reprised it in her famous Carnegie Hall concert in the '60s. Had all the more poignancy whenever she sang it after all she went through in life.

Judy, of course. The irony is that the studio originally wanted to cut the song from the movie. When you think how they screwed her up with speed to make her slimmer, and how screwed up her later life was, it almost sounds like a plea from her own heart.
John Martyn's version is very sweet too...
