That God will fight my battles, it's not for me to keep my eyes on my enemies.

The only way to solve this question is to kill your enemies. Than you have no enemies. Teach your friends to do the same. You should probably kill a few of your so called friends as a preventative, to keep them from becoming your enemy.

Keep your friends just as close as your enemies. You never know when you will need your friends to back you up. You never know when a friend will become an enemy.

"all general statements, including this one, are never true"
depends on the case, sometimes its good to keep the enemies closer and sometimes better as far as possible; I believe that if they are close anyway due to whatever reasons, keep them closer; then you can get to know them better, study them and know when they might "attack" what I do most of the time its to pretend to be naive and friendly so they can see me as a fool and just wait till when they are going to do something to me to stop them or react in a way they never thought I could.

It's simplicity is de-railing. You learn more in life than you know by learning the skills of keeping your enemies close. Maybe tolerance, compassion, understanding. To keep your enemies close, a broader spectrum of humanity is acheived.

To a certain extent, this statement is applicable in terms of people with whom you associate. It is figure of speech;it means keep an eye on your friends as well as your enemies.

Makes sense. Gotta keep an eye on those crafty fellas. The best thing to do is not make a lot of enemies.

I think it takes far too much mental energy to live this way. I keep my friends close, and I know who my enemies are, but I do not trouble myself with them. It's my life, my ride.

It is an interesting idea. Originally Japanese Yakuza philosophy I believe, later dopted in America by the Italian Mafia. It makes sense. And one way I keep them close by occasionally showing up at church servies. As for the rest....welll....I'll keep that to myself for now

Sounds good, although ultimately it didn't work for Don Corleone in "The Godfather", where this quote is from.
