There used to be LOTS of white players. But in about the late 70's and early 80's the African American youth started to see sports, especially basketball as a way out of urban environments and a much higher percentage of them than of any other ethnic group became involved in the sport. This, unfortunately developed into a stereotype that they were better or that it was even a 'Black' sport and less of other ethnic groups made any real effort. In truth sports is one of the FEW areas when a persons ability is actually still taken into account more than anything else. It is just that the percentage of one ethnic group to another in that area has shifted so that ther are more African Americans trying to get into it than all other ethnic groups combined.
