I have seen them worn low and attached to the shirt so that the tie does not "drift out" into anything and I have seen them worn up higher (about pocket high) with no apparent function other than appearance. I personally like the way it looks up higher, but it makes more sense for it to be worn lower. I have to give a speach tonight and would like to have my tie clip in the proper spot. Anyone know what is proper?

Tie clips should be between the 3rd & 4th button on the shirt.

I don't know that there is an Emily-Post proper position. A tie clip has a function- to keep the tie in place, and I think that function is best served at a slightly lower level- just below your solar plexus... and that very well may be between 3rd and 4th button...

I place mine right below the third button down from the top of my shirt.
