Directors don't generally know the first thing about running a football team - and captains are good footballers 90 minutes at a time. A manager is not only responsible for picking the best team for a match, they must also decide on tactics (which change depending on who you are playing), seek out and develop new players for the club, fitness training, practice. There are lots of things a football manager does that a director or team captain can't - and that's why football teams need them.

I am not a football fan but have always believed that the manager makes all the difference. All you need is good players and players that do exactly what the manager tells them, he is the one with the vision and the strategy on how to play the game. He is like the manager of any team of people, he leads, they follow his instructions. A good manager in any situation makes for a good team.

A Manager will set the tone of play. He will buy in, or sell out, players that he thinks will best suit the requirements of the club. He will be responsible for employing his back room staff.
He will usually be in charge of training regimes and oversee it during the week.
He will liaise with the Board as to the progress of the team and any outstanding issues.
He must be an excellent communicator, who can get the best out of his players, whatever standard they play at.
He sets the tactics for each individual game and adjusts them if they are not working.
If they are of a high enough position, he must be able to handle the media.
He must be able to represent the players, when he feels that is right to do so.
He must be able to spot players, that would enhance the team's results within the budget allowance that he has.
He must be successful and win games.
I'm sure that there are alot more, but if you want to know what they are, send an e-mail to, "the chosen one".

Trying to differentiate between a manager and a coach, you'll find the best managers are in fact coaches. I.e. they train the team to play in a certain way (usually dictated by resources) to hopefully get results. An out and out manager (Ferguson) employs a coach to do the above..

If you've ever played football manager then you'd know what an important job the manager has. He basically runs the team.

When you consider that an international star who shall remain Ferdinand "forgot" to go to a routine drugs test to go shopping instead, it shows the level of ability to look after themselves that most footballers possess. It's like saying "Why does an American Football team need a coach?"

A football team manager is the person who is responsible for the handling and distribution of the football gear. He really is more of a gopher than an administrator, as the title implies.
