Why don't you go to IRS.GOV and use the free online filing setup they have. If you just have W-2 forms it is a snap.

Whatever you do, don't let H&R Block get their hands on your information as they send it to India for processing. The IRS is always on them for one scam or another.

Have to defend H&R Block for a moment. We do not send anything to India for processing. None of your information ever leaves our company unless you authorize it to, as in the case of a refund anticipation loan. I've personally been to other tax prep firms, and our prices are competitive if not lower, and you get way more advice about how to improve your finances. We currently offer the ability to open an IRA or savings account out of your refund at 5.25% interest. If you come in, we'll go over all your forms, do the return, and give you the advice. IF you don't feel you've gotten your $$'s worth, you're not required to pay us a dime. You only pay if we file the return. IF you have filed with us, and something happens (tax law change, computer glitch, IRS disagrees with return preperation) we have automatic year-round service and will help you at no extra charge. We will go with you on an audit to explain how th return was prepared at no extra charge. We will also pay any penalty or interest at no extra charge. (There is also an extended warranty available that will pay the tax and includes full audit representation)
I work for the company because I believe that I can do good for people when I sit down and do a thorough eval of your financial and tax situation. I know many others who feel the same way. For us, it's not about JUST getting the right numbers on the right line. It's about helping you understand your financial situation and how you could improve it. (Without getting a second or third job). I know that's just a plug, and I'm definitely not asking anyone to go spend a lot of $$ because I said so, but I take it personally when someone says something that is not truthful, or has been 'spun' to look bad, when it is my mission to do the best thing for my clients, not the best thing for Block. Anyway...

ALWAYS have someone smarter than you file your taxes.

I learned the hard way by going to H & R block and ended up having to file amendments for numerous years when I went to a Highly educated CPA tax accountant. He found errors from H & R block that could of cost me alot of money if audited.

Our accountant learns all the new tax laws which I never plan on learning about. I am happy to pay him a few hundred to get me back or save me thousands.

If you really are not worried about your taxes and getting everything YOU are entitled to then go ahead, go to one of those discount preparers and be sure to ask about a good tax attorney for later, if you ever get audited, for the preparer will not stand behind you like a CPA will.

Looks like you got a nice bunch of answers here... Good Luck with whatever you choose!

If you have a very straightforward, one-income, normal deductions kind of financial life, many use TurboTax and TaxCut software.

If you want a franchise-type operation, H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt are the #1 and #2 largest operations in the US. I know that Jackson Hewitt's main customer is the early-filer who is going to receive a sizable refund.

But if you have complex tax issues like estate or fiduciary returns, are self-employed, etc. I would suggest finding a good local CPA (Certified Public Accountant) who specializes in individual tax preparation.

I would not think that always getting a refund is a good sign. If you get a large refund you should change the withholding on your W4 so you get more money each payday. I would rather owe $100 then get back $1000 since I would not have paid the $1000 in the first place.

A tax preparer who guarantees you a large refund every year is not doing a good job in advising you on your withholding.

Unless you have complicated itemized deductions I know of no reason to use a tax preparer.

This year I went to www.expresstaxrefund.com to file my tax return and it couldn't have been any easier. Cost me 30$, and about 10 minutes of my life. Before I submitted I wanted to know how long it would take to get my return in the mail vs. direct deposit, and they even offered free tech support. I didn't even submit and they answered all of my questions on the phone. No complaints here. I'm definatly suggesting them to everybody I know.

I have always done my taxes myself.

If you are young, one job, no deductions, no mortgage interest to claim, etc., you should be filling out 1040X, found at your local library or online at the link below.

I paid less than $50 to use CompleteTax, for both federal and state returns. http://www.completetax.com/

It's online, secure and very easy to follow step-by-step directions - even if you do have some of the following deductions I mentioned above.

Give it a try!

H&R Block sends their returns to India for processing. What a moron he is!!. I work for H&R Block and we process our returns in our own offices before sending them to the IRS for approval .He must work for Jackson-Hewitt.
