Dogs can understand simple words I believe. My dogs tell me things and I tell them and they understand. I think it depends on the relationship you have with your dog that will be the key.

There's a dog, can't remember the name or breed, but it can understand around 1000 human words. They have the capability to understand what we say, it's taking the time to teach them.
If you look in the guiness book of world records, there's a dog named Olive Oil. She has the worlds highest jump for a dog, or her breed. Which is a borzoi. Someone else might have broken the record, but look her up. Then you'll see all the other stuff that she does. She can balance on a ball, she hides, she jumps through hoops, she can fetch, she can do your basic obedience commands. She's a highly intellegent dog, with a very high energy level.
Pitch only tells the dog what sort of mood you're in. If it's low, your probly tired or angry. If it's high, you're in a good mood. If you have a deep voice, dogs can still tell the difference, byt the energy you give off, as well as your tone. People would be really surprised at how smart dogs are, and what dogs can pick up on, other then scent and sound. They just don't look close enough!
Now in your case, I think you might want to show the dog who's boss. It sounds like your dog knows all it has to do is growl a little, and you'll do what it wants. That's not a good sign.

Hello,
Congratulations! It is about time I saw post here that shows a person understanding their Dogs Lanuage.
Dogs do talk to their people, but not all people understand what the dog is saying, but... You do!
A dog will talk, not just in Barks and growls, but also with their bodies, you combine all this, and you can almost always know what he/she is saying.
Everybody can learn it, but not everybody will take the time to learn it. I commend You for your attentitveness to your Fur Baby. I really mean this, You have done Good Little Grasshopper!
Now for the rest of your question: Yes, they do learn a certain amount of our verbal language, but they also will learn our Body language and inflections (tones) and respond to all this. If you are taking the time to listen to them (which you have already done), they will also take the time to learn you... The important thing to remember is a dog has the power to reason to that of a 2 to 5 yr old child, what ever you can teach a child of this age, you can also teach a dog to a certain extent.
I am so pleased, and very happy to answer a question like this.
Good Luck with your Baby!

Yes I do believe they understand words. My dog does the same thing. It is almost like a song in different pitches. Sometimes he wants a treat and if it is not the treat he wants he continues to "talk". He will sometimes come to where I am and begin his song and have me follow him to the treats or to the door if he wants to go out. So my answer is yes ...I believe dogs talk and that they understand words, because if I ask him what? He continues to "talk" until I understand what he wants.

When I was younger i went to someones home who had a rotweiller and when we all had to have conversations the owners would need to spell certain words out when it came to foods or when leaving the house because the dog would react to it. No matter what type of food he would get all excited and start barking if you said a "nice thick steak" or if you said "I'm leaving to pick up the kids".
I swear it was like playing Charades.

Your dog, like all dogs are pack animals. This simply means in the "pack" there is a dormant dog and the rest are followers. Unfortunately you fall in the later.I`m willing to bet you are unable to remove toys or food once your dog has it by his side. If he is the dormant one in your household, Pull you when you walk, barks at everyone coming to the door, wont listen. You have a dominate dog. Correction is easy and will not harm the dog. But a dedicated owner is important

No they understand as long as they have been taught. Simple words like no, sit, stay they really know. And if you train them right they can learn questions like when my dog sits in front of me when I am on the couch, I ask her, "what do you want?" as soon as I ask that her ears perk up, then she just looks at me when I ask the questions and when I get to a certain question, she gives me her paw, or she starts to talk. (I have a husky dog who likes to talk by howling). Usually if I ask if she wants to go out, she'll run to the door, if I ask her if she wants to play, then she looks at her toy box and I then tell her to get a certain toy and she gets it. So you see, dogs really understand a lot if you teach them. Dog are incredibly smart, much more so than we realize.

Dogs have the ability to tell when a person is sad, mad, upset, angry, and happy. They react on what there instincts tell them, in this case, if a dog is hungry the dog will try to get your attention the only way it can (barking, growling, scratching, or howling). A dog may even scratch at the door where the food is if he/she is hungry. Just make sure you pay attention to his reaction around dinner, lunch, or breakfast, that should tell you when he/she is hungry. Dogs are smart, God made them that way.

You got it mainly pitch. I love to think they understand words. Yet, if you use the word tomato for sit and be continuous, that will mean sit.
But, yes they will communicate to us through barking, biting, liking, etc. as you have seen. Repetition on there part is just the same as ours. Kind of like "you get it yet?"
I do think as they grow up they evolve with us, whether it is words or pitch.

I would say so. It appears he is also talking through body language as well. And yes, I do believe animals do understand more than what a lot of people give them credit for.
