Use a Service to locate these hotspots. Just put in-Hotspots in City,State, and it should pull up information regarding internet cafe's, and the like. McDonalds has hotspots, and many other businesses these days such as libraries and bookstores. Some may charge a small fee, but many are free. You can also join in the Great American Wireless Access movement, where people across America are advertising their networks as available for travelers to connect to the internet. You can drive around neighborhoods and look for the signs that participants put out on their driveways or side of the house, or sidewalk allowing others to know it is OK to access the internet via their wireless connection. What is the sign or symble used? Well, that I don't know, I had the information once and then I let it go out of my heard as I have no reason to use it, nor do I want to allow strangers to access my own network in exchange for the privlege of accessing other's networks when I am traveling. I just don't travel enough to make it worth my while, nor do I feel comfortble allowing strangers to access my internet connection regardless of how my hardware firewall on the Router, and the software firewalls inside each computer would most likely keep people from actually accessing my computers themselves.

If you Google this issue you may find what signal/sgns/symbals are in use for this movement. I think it is nice of folks to do this, but it is jut not up my ally. People who participate are on their honor to share theirs too, but it is difficult to prove whether or not somebody really is sharing in exchange for the privelege of using others connections. So, you conceivably could use this network of Wireless offerings and not have your own network shared in exchange. It IS a viable option, and many just go WarDriving and force their way onto others Wireless connections, which is very rude if you ask me and unethical too.

All you need is an Adaper and the knowlege of how to configure new Network Connections. When you do this, you need to put the current connection you are using at the top of your preferred list of Networks and then click "Connect" in the list of availabe networks your Adapter picked up as nearby. It is very easy actually. While it is not exatly illegal to do this, it IS considered rude to do it univited. However, a study has shown that over 80% of Wireless Network connections are not protected with encryption, which means there is no password needed to access them and jump onto the connection. Sometimes my neighbors accidently and very temporarily attempt to access my Wireless connection due to how Wireless Adapters are constantly searching for the strongest signal to connect to. If you do not have your connection configured to only connect to your preferred network(s) then there are occasions when you are, lets say in your back yard in a lawn chair with a laptop, that your laptop adapter may connect to a neighbors connection as it has a stronger connection signal than your own connection at the time. However, if all of the neighbors have security enabled, then nobody can accidently jump onto the connection and use it.

I know this is far more information and a bit off track of your question, but I just figured you could use this and maybe find it usefull in the future. There is a movement which allows individuals to access and use private citizens Wireless Network Connections, but you need the symbal in order to find the houses which allow anyone who wishes to connect and use a connection offered up for sharing. Like I said, try Googling it, I am not sure of the actual name of the movement, I made up this one, as it makes the most sense to me as a name. I am not sure it even actually has a formal name as yet, but it should don't you agree? As you can find anything about the net on the net, a search should bring up some sort of information on this. I read it on the net a few months ago, so it is there.

Good luck and much success in finding connectivity away from home, and have a great day!
