WHen I see Johnny depp, there always seems to be a real depth about this man both as a person and in his acting ability. However sometimes I like Tom Cruise, but it seems like he doesn't have much depth and comes across as being so arrogant
It seemed like it took him literally YEARS to just be able to act "okay" in certain films, but w/no natural ability.
Just can't understand how he got famous really.

he got famous coz his face is kinda nice to look at- and he has a great body. he cant act though and his co-stars usually carry him and make him look good.did u ever notice that the only part he ever pulled off was of an unemotional killer?tells u something.
any actor would stink compared to johnny depp though.

Evidence in support of Tom Cruise as a good actor:
Rain Man
Jerry McGuire
The Firm
I haven't seen Collateral or Magnolia, but I'm told he was pretty good in both
*maybe* Far And Away

Evidence undermining the case for Tom Cruise as a good actor:
The Mission Impossible series
Eyes Wide Shut
Cocktail
Top Gun

I think he's shown enough emotional range and theatrical ability to react to his fictional surroundings to say he's a decent actor. I'm not convinced he could play a non-lead role or even do a convincing accent for an entire movie (see Far And Away), but he's a decent leading man & there's a place for such actors in the entertainment world. Not everyone can be John Leguizamo, John Turturro, Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Mandy Patinkin, or actors of that caliber.

Now if he could only keep his mouth shut when not in front of a camera....

I agree, no depth at all. Every movie he's in, he's just Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise - he never makes you believe he could be that character which is what any good actor should strive to do. The things he said about Brooke Shields - what a jerk! He's just got too big headed.

Tom Cruise had two things going for him, his looks and the incredibly talented actors he was cast in movies with. One example is people thinking Cruise was so great in Rainman but it was Dustin Hoffman who won the best actor Oscar. Jerry McGuire had a strong cast and the best part of the movie was the cute little kid who had me with "Hello".

I don't particularly like Tom Cruise (either as an actor or as a person), so I may be biased, but he does come across as pretty shallow... Perhaps that's his attraction.

Definitely, tom cruise is a very in depth actor even though he is a little off his nut

I will give him credit for mild depth in Jerry McGuire, however that is it out of the dozens of roles he has played. Frankly he is the most overrated actor in the business.

Although the man is a total freak in his personal life and ost of his movies don't require alo tof acting talent, if you watch Rainman and Jerry Maguire he definitely does have talent.
