it depends on what you learned to drive with,,,,,, you should always be familiar with the actual car you use for the test,,,,,
ps: i dont know why people are saying it matters which type car you take your test in, you get a license to drive an automobile, its doesnt designate which type ,,,,,,
if you are use to a manual,, then it would throw you off a bit to not be shifting, same with auto, if thats what you have driven mostly,,,,, shifting in a manual would distract you, and you want to feel comfortable,,,,,,,,, but i repeat, lol, your license you get will allow you to drive either,,, just not a big truck or motorcycle
pss: sorry, in the USA is one license, see from other responses some countries may be different

Auto will probably be easier. But you should drive with what you learned to drive with. Duh.
Some of these answers don't make any sense. If you learn on manual, then that's all you can drive? That doesn't make any sense. You aren't restricted to what transmission the car has. I passed my test with a automatic, but I drive a manual everyday.
colin caused a pile up because he can't drive an automatic. Who can't drive an auto? Give me a break. If he can't tell the brake from the gas pedal you are going to get people killed, and guess what, the gas pedal is the same location whether its an auto or a manual genius. If you can't drive with two pedals, how can you drive with three?
One answer said most cars for sale are manuals. No one in the US will ever have trouble finding a automatic car if that's what they want.

Automatic i imagine is easier, however your only going to ever be able to drive an automatic which is very limiting. I would say that learn in a manual you will soon get to grips with the clutch control its really not as difficult as it seems. Trust me if i can drive a manual car anyone can!

Automatic is easier but in the UK that means you will only have an automatic licence and can only drive an automatic car. Its worth driving a manual so you can then choose to drive either.

Driving a manual car is easy enough. I now of some people who are dislexic and have problems - but if you can drive a manual you should. If you take your test in an automatic you can only drive automatic cars, which are generally more expensive and not as easy to come by. It also means that if you have to drive a manual in an emergency, you are covered.

Automatics are easier, but if you pass in an automatic you can't drive a manual. If you pass in a manual, you can then drive either. Manual everytime!

Automatic because you don't have to worry about changing gears!! But then saying that I think it is better to pass your test using a manual car because at least then you know how to do it!!

Automatic is easier, but then you are not allowed to drive a manual car. Automatic cars are more expensive, and harder to find.
