When you are on hormonal birth control for a while, your body doesn't make as much lining for the uterus as it doesn't need to prepare for being pregnant. Now that you are off the pill, your body produces heaps of lining to support a baby, and when you don't get pregnant that month you have a lot more lining to shed, so a heavier period.

Birth Control does its job by affecting your hormones. If before you took the birth control your mens was not heavy, it maybe that your body has gotten used to the drug. Now, your body expects it to control your hormones. Your body should adjust eventually. However, your period should still last the normal amount of days, 3-7. If too much bleeding occurs, consult with your physician. Moodiness is a typical side effect for birth control. If the moodiness bothers you too much, you can consult your physician and try a different one.

It is not uncommon for periods to be lighter when you're on birth control. I guess the only way to lighten the flow would be to go back on it. I know what you mean about it making you moody, the one kind I was taking made me depressed. It might be as simple as having your doctor switch you to a different kind of birth control - that's what worked for me.

When I was on the pill my period was always lighter so when I went off the pill my period seemed to be heavy. If your period doesn't adjust back to "normal" on your next cycle you should see your doctor.
