Not all programs allow you to go in and out of Insert (Typeover) mode. Those that do usually have an indicator on the screen, usually in the bottom right to indicate when Typeover is on because it destroys characters. The default is Insert in 99.99% of programs. The Insert key is the toggle for the mode.

On the keyboard to the left of the numbers keys, you should see the following six keys: Insert home PageUp
Delete End Page Down
If you press the Insert Key it will put the Typeover on and you shld see OVR also highlighted at the bottom of your screen.
