when i was a teenager back in the 70's, i used to hitchhike quite a bit. i also picked up hitchhikers all the time. but times have changed. the world has become a more dangerous place. most people have fairly reliable cars nowadays, so you don't see too many people trying to hitchhike. i would probably still give someone a lift, but i'd look the situation over pretty good first. if it was a big guy with charles manson eyes, i'd drive on by. i might even speed up a little.

unfortunatly I have to say yes... like you it was many years ago but I thought nothing of it, and I would pick up hitchhikers as well.. I agree it is totally unsafe now. scary to look back and see the mistakes we have made.

I never have...I gave a woman a ride recently (I didn't really think of her as a hitchhiker at the time) and the ride went fine, she was a little weird...I only took her a few blocks. When she got out of my car I saw a pistol tucked in the back of her pants...my heart sank! Anything could've happened, thankfully it didn't, she really just needed a ride. I'll NEVER give anyone a ride again, no matter how harmless they appear :)

Hitchhiked a lot in Spain, Italy, Greece, Carribean. Not too much in US except in California. Kinda fun, Few years ago when an undergrad and senior in high school.

I've always kind of wanted to, but don't think I ever could, just for fear of what could happen. Not to mention that most people won't pick up hitchhikers these days, making it a lot harder.

many years ago after a concert and some cool people drove 4 of us 20 miles home crammed in the back of a camaro.after that no id never do that again.

I have when I've had a breakdown, and I stop for anyone looking like they're in need. Some posters might not thought of humanitarian reasons. It's sad to live in fear. Where do you live to make you so afraid? I've never heard of a hitchiker assault in my area. I don't think there's psychos driving around looking to terrorize people around here.

No I never have. It has always been unsafe. You never know what weirdos are out there.
I would think more guys have done it then girls. I also think females who do this all by themselves are in self destruction mode.

no to dangerous back in the 60s - the 80s u could hitchhike and no u werent gona get raped or kidnapped i would take my chances in this socity
