That they are just seeing as a burden to the pockets of their families?
I consider old people to be very valuable cause they carry decades of life experience, I think that just the fact that they took care of us in our younger years and keep taking care of us by giving us wise advice they should be highly valued. It makes me sick when they are put in asylums because they are an ecomonic burden :( , I understand some people honestly cant take care of them, but to be put away just because their value as human beings is measured by how much they contribute to society???? That is sickening.

I say when ordinary citzens value "our senior citizens" that goes a long way. Since you say that you do then that means a whole lot. I certainly do and I plan to take care of my parent when she becomes old as she needs me because she was their for me. But it also goes beyond that. If there is an old lady in your neigborhood who is stricken in years, it doesn't take too much time to go over and check on her make sure she has a ride to the store, maybe cut her grass, see if she's eating or help her with transportation from time to time. Small things make a big difference. I think ppl should try there best to help their parents when they become old and if at all possible not put them in homes. But sometimes you can't help that I suppose.

these days it is becoming less an less likely that the aged will be looked upon as wise and cared for. Our youth is no longer being taught the importance of the elderly, and to respect your elders.
Our elderly are one of our most important assests. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
The elderly of today have seen and done it all. They are the best source of history we have. Instead of cherishing that, we treat them as a burden. It is truly sickening. That is what is so upsetting about the Social Security issue. It is OUR responsibility to take care of our elderly. So I don't see the issue.
They have contributed more in their lifetime then anybody today ever will. Its time to take care of them.

Americans are learning to value the older generation more than ever. There is a huge population of post war (baby boomers) now reaching their golden years. People are now starting to realize that in general, we have a poor system for caring for the elderly. However, it is far better now than a few short years ago.

I value thier knowledge too and wish to get as much of it as I can. Most people throw them in homes because if they can take carre of them, they don't want to. After stuffing them in there, don't bother to visit. It's disgusting, old people don't get the respect they do. For the ones outside of home have to worry about wussy-assed people who try to steal thier purses and break thier necks ( happened in NJ). Its puzzling.

it is certainly true...getting older is something americans fear, i think...all these products to help conceal or reduce the effects of aging are a testiment to this. eastern cultures look up to their elders as do the native americans...

...the current society, however, mocks and degrades our elederly population, seeing them as burdens, as crazy "old farts"...their opinions are often not listened to or valued...they are seen as outdated as opposed to wise

just check out America's retired veteran benefits programs. hell, look at active veteran benefit programs. and what about social security? we have every right to ***** about paying it, not because we shouldn't have to pay to support the elderly -- because we should -- but because we're funding that damn war with it.

Yes, sickening it is.

Though I'm sure not all Americans do so, only many.
