back in 1978 I was teaching a bibile school class, and we made these cool spheres out of circles of construction paper. we drew sqares on them wrote a scripture on each one, folded the flaps up and stapled or glued the flaps to make a "globe" or "sphere" I want to make these with my kids, but can't find a pattern anywhere. HELP

I think what you made was a "roughly spherical ball" not a true, smooth sphere (the only way to make a smooth sphere from fairly stiff materials that I know of is the "orange peel" segments put-tgether as in the link above).

Sounds like you made a type of geodesic sphere, but folding or cutting your disks so that you had triangles, hexagons or pentagons ...don't see how you could make a sphere with squares by themselves.
One fairly simple sphere shape is made "inside out" with flaps on its triangles probably in a similar way ...you could just do the same, but put the flaps on the inside instead:

Flat maps may be easier to carry around, but there is still a need to make globes so that Earth's geography can be viewed without any directional or spatial distortions. Printing the location of continents and oceans directly onto a round surface would be difficult. Instead, this map of the Earth is printed in flat, roughly triangular sections and then attached to a ball. These sections are called gores that are then glued to a sphere.
Attached is a link with instructions on how to create your own globe.

From your description and the date, I think it was probably using a geodesic which one of the few ways of making a sphere from flat pieces. (first link)
Although it could be an icosahedron, which is triangles. (second link)
