I had a leak in my garage ceiling and appears there was a little damage in it. The original leak has been fixed, but it appears the ceiling has a small hole in it. I believe it is a wallboard ceiling with rectangular shapes and I like to know how to patch it up.

if it is a drywall ceiling you can cut a square out and then cut a square patch to fit the hole just cut in the ceiling then tape with drywall tape and spackle sand and repaint

You don't actually say what size "small" is, if it is small the size of a coin, just apply self adhesive joint tape over the hole and apply a couple layers of filler, sand when try, and paint, if it is a larger hole 6"x6" or bigger, then you will have to cut out the "drywall" board and replace, cutting back the damaged board until you find sufficient fixings, the finishing process is the same, just a bit more filler.

first, how big is the damaged area? this will depend on how much and what type of work is involved. If the hole size is smaller than a quarter the job is simple.
Obtain a small jar of pre-mixed joint compound(any home improvement store).
take a small piece of cardboard insert into the hole so as it is lying flat on the back side of the wall-board (this gives the joint compound something to adhere to.
With a small putty knife apply some joint filler into the hole (not to much at first) let this set-up for a few minutes.
Then procede to finnish filling the hole and smooth out the edges. after this has dried, sand, and paint.
