I'd say, it does not matter. One needs so little to have a good life. If this person has a bad economic status because of not being able to create one it is a different story; because than it is also possible he will not be able to create a good relationship. If his economic situation is just not important for him, or if he just has had bad luck, but still is quite a catch for you, then go for it. To every situation you'll find an answer together if you are a good team in finding answers to situations. So... are you a good team?
Good Luck with you decision!

I don't expect my husband to support me financially, but I wouldn't want to be used by someone who doesn't want to work to feed themselves. I'm willing to be the one who works in the relationship if he takes care of the house, cooking, and childcare, if there are any kids. It would be okay for him to not work if he was going to school, I'd split the housework if that were the case.

My husband and I have always been poor college students, for as long as we've been together. We're both working on our PhDs and eventually we won't be poor. But I think love is a lot more important than money. You just need enough money to not be miserable, and in my book, that isn't very much.

Well, it DOES matter.

I would think what matters most is the following:

What kind of baggage do they bring? Rotten credit history, owes everyone money, has a demonstrated pattern of financial irresponsibility? This is not good.

If they are simply poor but working to improve their lives, this is OK.

I think what's more important is that your goals and their goals do not conflict.

Uh let me think. Of course economic status is important in a future mate. Are you kidding me?

absolutely. I could not be with someone who is unemployed or lazy. I prefer men who make money over men I have to support financially.
