For straight women I know, it's fun to hang out and dance without being hit on. (Married straight women especially like this.)

For men, it could be they're curious as to what it's like, or like the music and atmosphere.

Wanting to hang out with a gay male friend is a possibility, too.

As for me, I'm bi, and think every place is my place.

Your question suggests that the only reason that a person would go to bar is for dating purposes. There are other reasons that people choose to go to a particular bar. These reasons can apply to anyone going to any kind of bar:

1) The bartender(s) make great drinks.
2) They serve great food.
3) This bar is your friend's favorite bar.
4) You just want a drink. This bar is conveniently located
5) This bar has weekly bid whist tournaments. I like bid whist.

I used to go to gay bars, clubs all the time. It's great. I never got the cheesy pick up lines or pressured for my phone number or one night stands. My friends and I would just hang out, have a few drinks and dance. It was lots of fun. It's nice to be able to talk to attractive guys who have no intention of trying to get in your pants.

To avoid getting hit on!
Really, sometimes women are much easier to deal with than men... and at a gay male bar, it's fun to dance and be sexy without worrying so much that some guy is going to take all the flirting and revealign clothing the wrong way.

1. people actually dance and have a good time. You don't have to worry about getting shot, or people fighting, or trying to look extra cool or whatever

2. the men are usually dressed really nicely, so good eye candy

3. as another poster said- husband won't be mad

4. did i already mention more fun?

5. Of course, i wouldn't go to a lesbian bar by myself, only with a friend.

A better question might be, why would any person spend time with anyone who isn't just exactly like them?

It's just so much easier to only spend time with people exactly like me... that's why I only associate with white lesbians who are 5'1", in long term relationships, have adopted children, work at insurance companies, and drive Subarus.

There's never any stress, and I never have to learn anything new!

Seriously, why would anyone want to broaden their world?
What a waste of time!

The music is good at a gay bar and the drinks are reasonably priced.

Well, could be in the closet, could be with friends, could just find gay people fun to be with. Lots of reasons.

My wife goes to gay bars with me all the time, even though she's straight. Funny, she gets hit on more than me. Dammit!

There are hundreds of reasons. Heck one I used to go to in Alabama used to have straight couples that would be cheating on a spouse come in to hide from people but still go out and have a good time, not to mention several Japanese people used to come in because they wouldn't get harassed there....

I would imagine to talk to people, to have a drink, maybe play pool or darts, listen to music, dance........

Amazingly you can do the same things in a gay bar and a straight bar.
