When using an ear thermometer will an ear infection show a higher temperature?

My mother's temperature with an ear thermometer shows over 100. Mine shows 96.somthing. A regular thermometer shows us both as normal temp. But every time with an ear thermometer it shows over 100 for my mother.. (over explained and long question)

Check with a doctor if you are concerned. I am not convinced that ear thermometers really work that well. We do have one, but we always use our digital oral thermometer which is very accurate. A person with an ear infection does not always have a fever, and in fact, doesn't even always have pain either. Also, different people will often have different temps. within the normal range.
