In classic physics (based in large part on Newton's laws), energy based on mass at rest or in motion is summed up as TE = KE + PE; where TE = total energy, KE = kinetic energy, and PE = potential energy.
There are other kinds of energy that can be, and usually are, included in TE. For instance, heat energy (Q) might be included as it results from friction. In which case we would have TE = KE + PE + Q.
TE = constant; so KE, Q, and PE have to trade off. Thus when KE goes up, the heat and/or PE of that associated mass (m) must go down, and vice versa. This is called the conservation of energy law. That is, energy can be neither created nor destroyed, it can only be converted (KE to PE and vice versa).
Closely associated with the energy of moving bodies, we also have the work function W = Fd; where work has the same units as energy, F = the force moving a mass a distance d. This form of energy requires a mass actually moving some distance. Note that this is neither kinetic nor potential energy. It is in fact a converted form of KE after the mass was moved using KE. That is, KE became work done (W); so we can write KE = W.

Good Question! Kinetic energy is energy caused by motion of an object. It is the work/energy needed to accelerate a body from rest to its current velocity.
It gains this energy fro acceleration and when the body maintains this, kinetic energy remains unless its speed changes.

kenetic energy stored during motion.
like the teacups at the fair as they spinn they build up kenetic energy. at the end of the ride it normaly takes a min. or so to disipate this energy.to find the K.E. of an object moveing in a strait line use this formula
.5 * the mass * the square of the velocity
for a spinning object like the example use
.5* distance to the center * the square of the angular speed (in rads.)
