It would be Gerrard then Rooney.
Unfortunately nobody has cared to put Gerrard in a position to show his real potential. Whoever has listened to Stevie G will know that he is special. He is a humble man n a great footballer!
He has shown it time n time again that he is the man to take the troops to war.
Though in the later stages of his career Becks did seem to work hard, personaly i never thought of him as THE Captain.
I would take Stevie at Utd anytime. There are people who inspire others, who are natural at leading n i think he is. Despite his young age he has shown the rest how to do it.
Roo is equally capable. Tho he is firing blanks, Roo is a team player. He has great work rate but a bit too moody-afterall he is young n is learning.
I would have given the captaincy to Gerrard.
Man Utd 4eva
P.S can i moan abt McClaren?? I cnt get around the fact he is the manager! Y?y?y? :(

It was David Beckham..... His performance was better when he was younger. Currently, Steve McLaren has removed Becks from the national team, but I'm sure he'll do better after a season or two and will get his position back. I'm sure he'll be back before the 2010 World Cup. SO, DON'T WORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At present, the most valouable player in the English national team would have to be Wayne Rooney. He's very young, talented and is capable of not only scoring goals, but also is capable of working his body in the entire field. He has got a lotta energy, stamina, and (of course)power. His skills are outstanding as a young player and is a lot competitve with other youngstars like Lionel Messi, Lukas Podolski, and Cristiano Ronaldo. He still has a lot to learn as a young player and specially needs to be calm while playing. He's too aggresive and he needs to control his temper. TEMPER....... that's the only problem with Rooney but other than that he's perfect almost in most ways.

Wayne Rooney. He is an exceptionally good team man with loads of ability.Players evolve at different levels and I think we have not yet seen the height of his potential that will come when maturity of mind and game come together. Sure he is missing some goals that as a striker he is expected to hit, but he works very hard and can slip in wherever needed efficiently and quite effectively. He creates opportunity for his team mates and is not a selfish player.

Gerrard and Rooney.
I think they should've picked Gerrard as captain as he has shown that he can lead a team well. Is also a hard worker.
Rooney will be a real star when he reaches his prime.
I'd still pick Gerrard over Rooney/

Becks. His leaving has taken away ANY chance of them winning any important games in the future. Steve McLaren should be ashamed of himself. The Three Lions have lost their roar.
