The old truck lay rusting by the side of the road. His journeys were over, many miles completed. Yet, some hope remained, that his life was not yet done.

The grizzled farmer stumped his way slowly over to the old red truck. Casting his eye over the unlikely lump of iron, he turned to the seller and counted out a few paltry notes. The seller, grunted, took the money and chucked him the keys. Leaving him with the smell of old truck and too much sun.

The truck turned over in his own time. Having seen decades by now, the truck was not in a hurry to move. With a grind and a rattle, a squeak and a bang, he finally settled to a shaking rumble.

The farmer was pleased, his deal was sufficient. For over a hundred miles in any direction, there wasn't another vehicle to be had, at least not at the cost he could bear. The red truck would save his farm, at least for another year.

This is my first effort at a really really quick story. I'm not a practiced writer, so I hope it might help :-).

Try thinking of something thats happened to you. You may not think much has happened, but it could be anything. The time you ran out of petrol on the motorway, the dog at then end of the street bit your grandma. Or think of some crazy stories you've heard other people tell.
Or you could have lots of snippets from people, maybe a store clerk, and his 30 second interface with say 10 different people.

Try to come up with a main character for your story. Write down a description - male, female, eye color, etc. etc.

Then take this character and imagine then in some odd place or scenario – anything goes! Write down ideas on what would have to happen to your character or how they would react to the scenario you placed them in.

You can do this for multiple characters if you like.

This may seem futile, but it will help you flesh out some characters and give you insight into what you may want to happen to this type of character in a potential story. You may even come up with multiple story lines!

Strong well crafted main characters can inspire readers to love your story as well as drive you to write a great story for these imagined beings to be in! :-)

Well - you've not given a lot of guidance so I don't want any complaints. Here goes.....

As Jeremy walked into the pub, the heady mix of stale lager and cigarette smoke reminded him of his more youthful days back in Jedburgh. He thought about the times he had returned home at six o'clock in the morning after spending the night boozing with his college friends.

"Not for me" said Jeremy as he made his excuses and left the pub. He crosses to road, heading back towards home, to his new wife and his beatiful baby daughter when he realises, he didn't look both ways. BANG!! as the number 42 bus rolls right into him, taking him under the wheels. CRUNCH!! as his bones are crushed en-masse by the overbearing weight of public transport.

That'll teach him.
