If one adheres to the definition offered by the U.S. Census Bureau, the mid-Atlantic region comprises only three states: New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. As for Delaware and Maryland, well, the U.S. Census Bureau classifies them as South Atlantic states (blame Mason and Dixon for this one).

Therefore, the correct answer is (c). Connecticut borders New York. Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland all border Pennsylvania.

The inclusion of Virginia in (b) rules it out as the correct choice because Virginia does not border New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania. It does border Maryland, which, despite its cultural and economic ties to the mid-Atlantic region, is a South Atlantic state just like Virginia itself.

Definitions of the Mid-Atlantic region usually include the following states:[1]

* Delaware
* Maryland
* New Jersey
* New York
* Pennsylvania

In addition, many consider Virginia and West Virginia to be part of the Mid-Atlantic region.

It depends on your definition of Mid-Atlantic. For instance, all of your answers include New York as a Mid-Atlantic state, which doesn't make any sense at all, as 1.) it barely touches the Atlantic and 2.) it is definitely not in the middle of the coastline, but far to the northeast. Therefore, since you obviously have a different definition of Mid-Atlantic than me, it is impossible for me to answer this question in accordance with my own beliefs. However, the only choice which makes sense geographically is b, as the others don't completely border a region.

Edit: After further research, it appears that these states are designated in this way due to the fact that Virginia is in "the South". Well, okay. I didn't make these terms up.
