The purpose of marriage is to bring two people into the highest form of commitment possible in this life. It is a legal, binding contract between two people as a witness to the rest of the world of their commitment to love, honor and cherish the other until death parts them.

Entering into this union also enables the married couple to enjoy legal, tax and work benefits not available to single people.

Animals do not have the mental capacity to form commited relationships. Therefore, marriage is not neccessary for them.

The purpose of marriage was to formalize when one has intercourse for the purpose of reproducing. It has only been a formal union since the first forms of religion figured that sex should be regulated. Since the beginning of time (at least what is recorded in religious teachings) marriage, and many other laws and social practices, are based on religious teachings.

Animals don't have religion.

Animals dont have marriage because they have no need for it. Only humans keep their young for 18 years before sending them out on their own. Also most young animals already do what is needed for them to survive.
