Say a couple thousand more than you really want. That way, it gives them room to come down a little and makes them feel better.

When they are asking you how much you want, you have to keep in mind that they are basically using that question to bargain shop amongst all their candidates.

So, best advice is to keep in mind what the bottom level wages for that job, and your experience level in your area is and throw out a figure around there.

Many times, if they feel they can get someone cheaper, that will be the end of your chances right there. Ive found that companies will consistantly take price over quality 99% of the time.

Depends on where you are in the cycle. The answer I have given is "look, from what I've seen I want this job and hopefully from what you've seen you want to work with me. It's too early to talk brass tacks but if I'm the right candidate I'm sure you're not going to let me walk for the sake of a couple of thousand and by the same token, I'm not going to do something stupid with my career for a small amount of money. Let's go into this in more detail as and when we have a concrete proposition on the table".

Good luck

This answer applies to a professional salaried job interview situation and it assumes that the company you are interviewing with is aware of your current salary history. Hourly jobs are another animal.

I have advised people to say exactly the following:

Here are my top reasons for making this career move...

I am anxious to align myself with an organization that offers career growth and an opportunity to excel.

I am interested in (depending on your personal situation): Moving to this location. Doing this new job. Advancing to this level. etc.

While salary is not my most important criteria, I certainly want/need to be reasonably compensated. Based on what I have learned about your organization through my research, I feel that this will not be an issue for you. I am confident that we can come to an agreement.

You need to think about how much you are worth and if you want $30,000 a year tell them that and don't settle for less, this might mean looking for a job else where but you need to be firm and don't just accept anything.

In the case that you need a job and you are willing to take anything ; just tell them you are willing to negotiate an amount and give them your highest offer, if they accept that you come out on top but if they go lower you still have a chance.

I would answer what is appropriate to the job description- for your personal information-check out yahoo jobs or similar. Even ask on Answers and get an actual idea of salary or wage. Maybe give them an example of your past income (rounded) if you worked a similar job.

If you really need the job (for whatever reason) say 5% less than the going rate. If you are looking to improve your finances, say 15-20% more than you are making in your present job.

First, do research in the industry and find out what other employees in that position make, and suggest a couple thousand more. Don't go overboard or they may not consider you. Be reasonable. Best of luck!
