Often, you do both in the same essay. Compare things to find their similarities, and contrast them to look at their differences. Often you do both at the same time, a comparison/contrast essay.

when you compare two things, you show what they have in common or how they are alike...when you contrast two things, you show how they are unlike one another or how they are different....
