Just relax when you put on a tampon. Maybe you're in the wrong position when you're trying to put it in. I find the best thing to do is stand with one foot on the toilet seat, that works good. And when you do insert it, remember that your vagina slopes towards your back, not straight up, so insert it towards your back. If it is not going in properly, then just twist it very gently to the right or the left. Keep trying, you will get it right, don't worry. But you don't have to use tampons; if you find them uncomfortable right now just stick to pads for now, and try using tampons again a bit later. But the most important thing to remember when inserting a tampon is to relax, because if you are tense, then your muscles will tense up too, making it hard for you to insert the tampon. That could be the reason nothing works. So just relax when trying to put one in.
Try it a few more times, and if it doesn't work, stop trying to use them for a little while and try again in a few months. Good luck, I'm sure you'll get it right. :)

Have you tried different brands? Maybe it is the brand you are using? Make sure you are using tampons with applicators, that is easier. Also the angle that you insert it makes a difference. The tips about figuring out the angle with your finger first are good ideas. Make sure that you have it deep enough. If you can feel the tampon in you then it is not in far enough. Tampons should not hurt or be uncomfortable. But remember tampons are not for everybody. If all else fails use pads.

You do not HAVE to use tampons if they are uncomfortable for you just wear pads. However tampons are really convenient for swimming, sports, etc... I only use them. But I only use the Kotex brand as they have a plastic applicator which is much more easy to insert. Sit on the toilet legs spread all the way open, take tampon out of wrapper, grab with thumb, pointer and middle finger, insert into vagina until fingers touch your body, then use your pointer finger to push the actual absorbent tampon into vagina. Then pull out the applicator. Stand up, if you feel nothing you have inserted it corectly. This may take some practice, I got my period at 11, started using tampons at 13 and I struggled for a few months with them, but now they are all I will ever use

It might sound disgusting but feel where you are puttin the tampon by inserting a finger into yourself (use lube to make it easier) once you understand which passage you have to insert it into, it will help you with the angle that you need to push it in. I wouldn't advise first time users to try anything other that tampons with applicators, that way you only have to push it half way in then the applicator pushes it the rest of the way. Once you have done it a few times you won't even think about it again!!

I know how you feel. Come summer time, I am like a fish and can't stay out of the water, except that one week every month. All I can tell you is to keep trying. All those little instruction packets they give you tell you that you aren't going to get it on the first try, but what they don't tell you is that you might not get it on the second, third, fourth, or even 20th try.
I have only been able to get it to work once, and it was exciting! Personally, I wish there was a way to practice when you didn't have your period, but there isn't.
In any event, all I can say is keep trying and good luck.

You can have a normal life without tampons. Try some different brands of tampons though, if you really want to use them. Unfortunitly, there is no quick fix that will make it easier for you to insert them. Practice, and as the others have mentioned, the angle is your key to success. Good Luck

It took me almost 15 years before I got the hang of using tampons.
First, I completely agree with the person who mentioned the plastic applicator. Those are SO much better. Kotex and Tampax Pearl and Tampax Sport have them. They are much easier and pain free to insert. Whereas the cardboard catches and can be quite uncomfortable. (Just remember, the plastic applicators cannot be flushed.)
Secondly, make sure you are going with the right absorbancy. If you are using an absorbancy that exceeds what you need, that can lead to discomfort, especially upon removal.
Third, you can insert the tampon in one of three ways. Sitting on the toilet with legs apart....standing up with one leg up on the toilet seat....or lying on your back (obviously do this at home), with your knees toward your chest, legs spread.
Now, the key is to angle back the tampon as you insert it. (This was where I went wrong for so many years.) If you don't properly angle it back, (at a slight slant) it is going to feel uncomfortable or hurt.

NO don't use pads! Once you have got the hang of tampons you will never ever want to go back to pads, trust me!
This might sound a bit gross, but try sticking your finger up there first so you know you are pushing it in the right place. Use a brand with an applicator: make sure you're in the right place then try twisting it gently round and round to get it going up there. Then relax (breathe out as you push up), and there you are!
And try to relax!

If they are bothering you, your body is telling you no. I know most women don't like using pads but how long can a period last a couple days to a lil over a week? Its not that bad. I use tampons most of the time and I had none for my last period so I was stuck with a pad but I got over it and saves me from catching TSS from a tampon thats a bonus.

I was the same thing for me the 1st time I first used them. I prob used a whole packed and it seemed so uncomfortable but You just have to relax and if you feel like they are hurting you its because their not inserted well. After that you can´t even fe I suggest you try the soft ones. If not use pads.Use what ever makes you feel comfortable and secure. Give it a shot later on if you insist on using them, that's what I did.Good luck!
