That's a toughy - there is a commonly accepted statistic that one child in twenty has a different father from the one they think they do - so women cheating must be statistically significant (of course men also cheat - but that's a separate question not being asked here).

From an evolutionary biological standpoint, women at their most fertile sleep with different men in order to get their eggs fertilised by the type of men who sleep around - in order that their children will then be more likely to sleep around - in order that their eggs will be more likely to be passed on. This is an evolutionary imperative - not the most important one and certainly one that most women manage to avoid.

I think the second reason women cheat is when their husbands ignore their emotional needs - this is the women who turn to caring men who treat them as a human being.

I hope you haven't been hurt in this way and if you have I hope that you find a way to happiness.

I'm an englishman in his 30s living in england.

Good luck!

I don't cheat or lie- I'm 47 and been married for 20 years and he's still my best friend. I live in California and travel for my job a couple times a year as a proffessional artist. I think we are raising a generation that is told by the media and such that this is ok-that if your unhappy-its someones elses fault and that vows are not vows. Its a sad thing. The ME generation! I wonder who they will expect to pick up the tab or fix the problem when their kids are grown and whining and they have no retirement...as for women in general-I have no close friends or aquaintences that have. They've left their husbands first. My rule is the same as for guys- its a vow before God and your family and if you do youre a sl***t and pretty low class dirt. I don't like the world's double standard on it either-

I am a 33 year old Englishwoman living in the US. I run a computer consultancy and have had plenty of opportunity to cheat on my husband but I never have.

Why do you think men lie and cheat? It is not a gender thing, it is a human thing.

Women cheat and lie for the same reason men cheat and lie, because they can. And also because they are unhappy with their marriages and find comfort somewhere else.

Anywhere there is a man cheating, there is also a woman helping him cheat who most likely knows he's married. Women are better at hiding that they're married, so many men won't even know they are helping her cheat. Food for thought.

Because they can since divorce means they loose nothing but the man which can be replaced, while they get to keep his stuff and finacial support.
